CARING FOR YOUR JEWELLERY

Jewellery is a truly special accessory. Whether it’s a sentimental piece or just something you love, you want to keep your jewellery looking at its breathtaking best and as good as new. Here we help you do just that.

General Tips

  • Store your jewellery in a clean, dry place
  • Don't jumble pieces together as they can scratch each other and cause chipping
  • Keep them stored in separate boxes or in pieces of tissue paper
  • See your jeweller at least once a year in order to have all your jewellery professionally cleaned and checked for general wear and tear. Visit or call your local Fields store for more information.

Cleaning

Jewellery can become dirty from natural skin oils and from dirt in the atmosphere. Regularly cleaning jewellery will help to keep it looking as gorgeous as the day it was purchased.

Diamonds

A clean diamond has a beautiful fire and a brilliant sparkle. Everyday products such as skin cream, soap, oils and cosmetics can dull your diamond’s natural radiance. Keep your diamond clean and gleaming.

Here are some tips on how to keep your diamond at its best:

  • Our Complimentary Cleaning Service: At Fields, we want your Diamonds to look their best at all times, this is why we offer a complimentary cleaning service. This service includes a professional cleaning and inspection of your Diamond Ring. Call in to any of our stores and a member of staff will be happy to assist you.
  • Cleaning Solution: Use our recommended liquid jewellery cleaning solution, which is available in all thirteen Fields stores nationwide. The liquid cleaner is the ideal home-solution to keeping your diamond as beautiful as they day you bought it.
  • Mild Detergent Bowl: Make up a small bowl of warm water and a mild cleaning detergent – washing up liquid or liquid soap. Place your diamond jewellery into the bowl and use a small soft toothbrush to gently clean the jewellery. Rinse the jewellery thoroughly after cleaning and pat dry with a Fields Gold and Diamond Cloth, or a soft lint-free cloth.

Gold

Here are some tips on how to keep your Gold Jewellery clean and looking new.

  • Gold Polishing Cloth: In order to restore the lustre of your gold jewellery, you may simply use a gold polishing cloth to polish the metal, which should produce a lovely shine. Gold Polishing cloths available from all our stores are specially designed to remove surface dirt from gold, while restoring sparkle.

Alternatively, you may use a simple lint-free cloth which will also help re-shine the gold.

  • Cleaning Solution: The Gold and Diamond Jewellery Cleaner is probably the best home-solution to cleaning your gold jewellery. Specially designed to remove dirt from the metal and any diamonds or stones set in the jewellery, it is fast, effective and is available from Fields. (Not suitable for gold plated items).
  • Mild Detergent Bowl: If you do not have a Fields Gold and Diamond Jewellery Cleaner, you may make your own home solution. Simply mix a mild cleaning detergent such as washing liquid or liquid hand soap to luke-warm water to create a sudsy solution. Immerse the jewellery in the solution and use a soft brush to gently clean the jewellery. Rinse under fresh water, and pat dry using a lint-free cloth.
  • Buff and Polish: Gold jewellery, especially gold rings, can become scratched due to daily wear. In order to restore your rings’ original lustre have your ring buffed and polished by our goldsmiths. Simply visit any one of our stores to organise this.

White Gold

All cleaning tips suggested for cleaning Gold can be applied to White Gold. However, your white gold rings will need additional polishing care as the Rhodium plating which gives the metal its white sparkle will naturally wear away from daily wear.

  • Rhodium Plating: It is recommended that a white gold ring should be re-rhodium plated every 8-12 months in order to help it remain as beautiful as the day it was bought. Drop into any of our thirteen stores and organise to have your rings re-rhodium plated, buffed and polished. You won’t recognise how fabulous they look after a little TLC.

Silver

Sterling Silver reacts to sulphur dioxide in the air, and naturally discolours because of this. This is normal and easily rectified.

  • Cleaning Solution: The Sterling Silver Cleaner is probably the best home-solution to cleaning your Silver jewellery. This liquid has been specially designed to remove oxidation or discolouration from the metal, and to remove dirt from any stones set in the jewellery. Cleaning solution is fast, effective, and affordable. This solution will restore your silvers’ original colour and sparkle. (Not suitable for silver plated items).

Note: It is not recommended that pre-oxidized jewellery (such as Pandora) is cleaned in a de-oxidation solution.

  • Silver Polishing Cloth: In order to restore the lustre of your Silver jewellery, you may simply use a Silver polishing cloth on the metal which should produce a lovely shine. Our Silver Polishing cloths have a unique solution embedded in them, specially fashioned to remove surface dirt while restoring sparkle. Polishing cloths are available from Fields.
  • Mild Detergent Bowl: If you do not have a Fields Sterling Silver Jewellery Cleaner, you may make your own home solution. This solution is effective in cleaning pre-oxidized items, such as Pandora.

Note: This option is far less effective in removing oxidation.

Gold Plated / Silver Plated

Gold and silver plated items can be cares for in the same manner. Use a lint-free cloth to remove any surface dirt from the item and to polish the metal. Do not use liquid solutions to clean plated jewellery, as to do so may remove the plating.

Ceramic and Stainless Steel

Though both materials have different properties and features, the care for both are similar. Avoid contact with glass and metal surfaces which could purposely scratch the material. Store the item separately in its own watch or jewellery box.

To clean Ceramic or Stainless Steel, a simple lint-free cloth is recommended. You may also like to use a small dry to remove any dirt that has gathered in the bracelet of the watch. Do not use jewellery solutions or liquids on these materials.

Murano Beads

Murano beads require care, just as other materials. It is important to avoid contact with other class surface to avoid scratching or damaging. Do not use silver cleaner on the beads as to do so may have a negative effect on the glass surface, or colour. We recommend using a warm water solution to clean your beads – suitable for the Sterling Silver inner bead too.

  • Mild Detergent Bowl: Simply mix a mild cleaning detergent such as washing liquid or liquid hand soap to luke-warm water to create a sudsy solution. Immerse the jewellery in the solution and use a soft brush to gently clean the jewellery. Rinse under fresh water, and pat dry using a lint-free cloth.

Leather

One should never clean a leather bracelet or necklet using metal-specific jewellery cleaner. It is advised that you do not immerse the leather in water or any other liquid as it is porous and will become damaged. Simply using a damp cloth you wipe the leather clean is sufficient. Regular use of leather creams and oils can help prevent staining.

Cautions

  • Always carefully read the instructions on our Fields Jewellery Cleaner solutions, as prolonged immersion in solutions can damage your jewellery.
  • Always rinse and dry jewellery after using any sort of solution or detergent.
  • Do not use jewellery cleaning solution to clean items with:

  • Opal
  • Coral
  • Tanzanite
  • Peridot
  • Turquoise
  • Paste Stones

  • Items with water-soluble fixing.
